Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox have reached an agreement with shortstop Stephen Drew on a one-year deal for $9.5 million.

Thanks in part to recovery from an ankle injury Drew hit just .223/.309/.348 in 327 plate appearances this past season between the D’Backs and A’s, but he drew interest from several teams, including Tigers, Yankees and Athletics. But the Red Sox have him and, as Heyman notes, will use him as a stopgap between now and the time when either Jose Iglesias or Xander Bogaerts are ready.

It’s been a busy winter so far for the Red Sox, who, in addition to Drew, have signed  Shane VictorinoRyan DempsterDavid Ross and Mike Napoli.

Youkilis’s $12MM and his 2012 numbers look like Yankees got a bargain compared to what the Red Sox are paying Drew ($9.5MM). When you also consider the Red Sox traded away Marco Scutaro to begin the 2012 season.

You’ve been all over the Red Sox free agent signings this offseason. I don’t know which team you do support, but you love to hate the Sox. Yes, all of the signings would be awful if you only considered each free agent’s 2012 numbers– but this year is a new season, and all of these guys have had some degree of success in the past as well.

In case you haven’t noticed I’m not the only one that has been all over the Red Sox signings this off season. But if you’re interested in why. It’s because the Red Sox dumped over $250,000,000 in salary this past summer. You would think with all of that money they saved they could have signed some better players than: Jonny Gomes, Victorino, Drew, etc… That’s just my opinion. I don’t mean this to be sarcastic but if you had been on this site for any length of time you would know what team I am a fan of. Have a good day.

      I’m confused.

Are you suggesting that you’d prefer the 37 year-old for 3/20mil over the 29 year-old with more natural talent on a one-year flyer?

The Red Sox overpay again for a stop gap solution. I give them credit for the contract only being for 1 year.

The next question is about Napoli. That contract has yet to be finalized due to health considerations.
