Marines and sailors of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and sailors assigned to the USS Wasp (LHD 1), cleared debris and helped locals in moving damaged property from roadways at Rockaway Beach, N.Y., Nov. 9, 2012. The Marines and sailors worked in a collabrative effort to help after the area was damaged by Hurricane Sandy, which destroyed many peoples homes. The 26th MEU operates continuously across the globe, providing the president and unified combatant commanders with a forward-deployed, sea-based quick reaction force. The MEU is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force capable of conducting amphibious operations, crisis response, and limited contingency operations. They are slated to deploy in 2013.
