Many pundits today may be wondering what it is about Barack Obama that is causing all of these mass shootings.
That’s a topic for another day.

Adam Lanza

What is clear, is that decades of failed liberal policy have made it difficult to force people with severe mental diseases to be treated or institutionalized. And, then we are all shocked when these same dysfunctional individuals go on a shooting rampage like we witnessed today in Newtown.

For Your Country posted this back after schizophrenic Jared Loughner went on his shooting rampage in Arizona that left several people dead and US Rep. Gabby Giffords seriously wounded.
It is just as true today.

It actually very hard to force people with severe mental diseases to be treated because of a range of reforms pushed by progressives starting in the 60′s:

  1. Ronald David Laing, a Scottish Psychiatrist, In the 60′s put forth the foundation of the Anti-Psychiatry movement. He maintained that schizophrenia was “a theory not a fact”. The popularity of Laing’s theories is blamed for decline in students entering the psychology profession.
  2. President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 Community Mental Health Centers Act accelerated the trend toward deinstitutionalizationwith the establishment of a network of community mental health centers and changes in laws regarding commitment.
  3. Kenneth Kesey, wrote “One Flew over the Cukoo’s Nest”based in part on Laing’s thinking (and his own intensive use of drugs). “Kesey did not believe that these patients were insane, rather that society had pushed them out because they did not fit the conventional ideas of how people were supposed to act and behave.” The Book, play, and later the movie, portrayed a anti-psychiatry philosophy leading to a public displeasure with residential mental facilities resulting in further deinstitutionalization policies.
  4. Deinstitutioanlization led to many legal and structural changes. American public mental hospital patients declined from more than 550,000 in 1955 to fewer than 40,000 at present. The displaced patients now represent 30-50% of the homeless populations.

As a result of Laing, Kennedy, Kesey and public efforts to transform the mental health care system to be more humane, to characterize mentally ill people as “Just thinking differently”, and characterizing mental health care as some form of evil, we now have a system that makes it virtually impossible to get folks like Loughner the care they need.

Deinstitutionalization policies driven by “do good” liberals and the federal government put focus on limited bad acts. Kesey wrote a story based on his LSD induced observations in one VA mental hospital. Once his story was put into film, his small example falsely characterized the bulk of mental health care as dehumanizing and made it impossible to force the Laughners of the world to get treatment.

Critics will focus on gun control after today’s school massacre.
The focus should be on failed liberal policies that excuse rather than assist extremely dysfunctional individuals.

  1. Yes I agree. It is not guns – it is failed liberal progressive policy in the UNIONIZED public school system that insisted teachers stop teaching about morality, character building, ethics, and values. In the early 1900′s, the Readers from which students learned to read were much different – they were taught the classics, and the intent was to teach strong morals, love of country, etc. (look it up: THE JONES READERS, 1904); even passages from the Bible were taught in public schools. In addition, look at the crap violent movies and tv shows LIBERAL UNION Hollywood brings us, coupled with the violent video games. You don’t see that crap coming from the “right wing extremists”. Anything goes these days – and it’s all from the liberals. Going against human nature and procreation -accepting gay marriage, killing the unborn, removing God (who incidentally gave us life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness according to the Founders) is fine with them. But it’s the right wingers that are extreme. Blame anyone or anything else but them.

    trouble is, society went from
one extreme to the other.. :-(

the main problem prog-dem-libs have is insisting everyone fits into
the same mold, then they separate and assign privileges according
to differences, all the whilst screaming collectivism at the top of their
diversity mold masters lungs.. they epitomize of hypocrisy..

  3. Fight Fire With Fire. These shooters prey on the innocent and unarmed. We put our kids safety in the hands of the Teachers and the School to keep them safe. All school districts should encourage Teachers and Administrators to be armed. This would deter any violence and mitigate any attack. Staying proactive instead of reacting after the fact is the only way to protect our kids.

  4. From what I read about the shooter and how he got his hands on those firearms, his mother purchased them legally. Why oh why didn’t she keep them locked up in a gun safe if she had a son with personality disorder? Talk about an accident waiting to happen…I’d say she was at fault, but the liberals in the media will make it all the fault of the pro-gun lobby. They’ll say it’s time to outlaw guns. I used to smirk when I’d hear gun owners say “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.” But now I know it is true.

  5. According to reports I’ve read – the school just implemented new security procedures – yet opened the door and let this kid in.

What kind of security is that? Further, after Columbine – I thought schools had pledged to only allow school personnel into the building. Some procedures were not followed and this whole horrible episode may have been prevented.

If a proper procedure had been used – perhaps only his mother would have been killed, as tragic as that sounds, it’s still better than children being murdered by an insane madman intent on killing as many as possible and killing himself.

that’s not only disturbing, destructive, and despicable, but
unquestionably detrimental in regards to the guardianship
    of our children..

bg – it doesn’t help when the narcissist in chief politicizes every incident for his own agenda. I realize you know this, and I’m just makin’ the point.

If America is serious about dealing with it’s problems, it’s time to put the blame where it belongs – on liberal policies that yield the opposite of it’s stated intent.

  8. I agree. The mainstreaming of people with severe wiring problems certainly presents as serious a potential threat as does the presence of guns. I don’t think the prevailing school of thougth in the MSM will allow this to be discussed, however.

  9. Don’t blame President Kennedy for this mess – a network of community mental health centers is a good idea. He didn’t de-institutionize sick people. I have read that Reagan was responsible for a lot of mentally disturbed people being put out of hospitals onto the streets. Whatever is going on is definitely not Kennedy’s fault – he died trying to make a better world for all.

Jenny – they remove God so the State become God. They’re not very complicated nor refined.

If God wanted Man to rule over his kingdom, he would have created Man as an equal and not in his image – God would have created Man with God-like abilities, and he didn’t.

Man is not a God, and only a mere mortal – that’s part of God’s plan for Humanity. And nothing liberals can say or do will change that no matter how they attempt to hoist the State.

  11. WAY TO GO JIM ! Mental illness only exists AFTER you kill somebody …as an out to avoid punishing the satanic psychopaths the God hating liberals have such a love affair with. The constitution now only exists to serve the Muslim terrorist and serial killers . No constitution for you the law abiding tax paying freedom loving responsible American.

  12. #2 Removing God…THAT IS THE PROBLEM!

When tragedies like this happen they ONLY WANT GUN CONTROL,

AND THINK NOTHING ABOUT THE UNBORN BABIES BEING BRUTALLY KILLED ‘EVERYDAY’ IN ABORTIONS!

AND THEY CERTAINLY DON’T SAY OR DO ANYTHING ABOUT ERIC HOLDER ARMING MEXICAN GANGS!

  14. Pretty much everyone of these mass murders with mentally unbalanced youths has occurred in a liberal Mecca. Colorado and now Connecticut.

This kid has a mother that was a teacher – not surprisingly she is probably part of the Teacher’s Union and we all see how they have acted in Wisconsin and Michigan, of late.

My sympathies remain with the children who were murdered by this madman not with the school, nor the policies that had good intentions yet failed once again.

Once again, children are the victims of liberals – whether through indoctrination in the class room (which I consider mental abuse) or not following a common sense approach to security.

hey. that’s your opinion, and i somewhat agree..

however, liberal policy is no more responsible for Adam
Lanza mowing down innocent defenseless children than
the guns he stole from the Mother he murdered are..

policy is a separate issue, why wait until a disaster such as this
to point the obvious out?? sorry, but imho, it’s a cheap shot, no
    matter who makes it..

  16. Thanks Jim for reminding us of the real probem with Liberalism.

Somhow in the noise a article like this cuts through the static and bring up the real problem. It is too bad that Judges cannot be sued by familys of the victims of this madness.

Watch the UNATT and the push for its passage There will be plenty of RINOs and liberals waiting for a reason

  17. well… since liberalism is a mental disorder you can pretty much see why progressives would oppose such out of fear

  18. I don’t understand how this happened or how any of these school shootings have happened. When I was in school (a long, long time ago) we had marshals (several different students for each period on every floor and in every wing during classes who stopped anyone who was roaming the hall without a pass. These marshals were selected by an elected head marshall. No one was allowed on the floor without that pass and anyone who was caught was sent straight to the principal’s office. and not allowed to procede to their destination. When did they stop this procedure and allow strangers to roam the halls? I noticed it years ago when joining my grandsons for lunch or taking them something they forgot. The school office could not have cared less about my presence in the halls but were really put out that I had brought the kids something and they had to summon them. They were really quite rude about it. It almost felt like I was back in school. No respect whatsoever.

  19. I remember when the ACLU pushed this crap of freeing the lunies as a civil right

  20. bg – how is it cheap shot to point out the policies that allowed this to happen?

First of all – the school opened the door because he was the kid of a teacher – how they knew that is beyond me because there are other reports that he was wearing a mask.

Opening the door was a major mistake, and I’m pointing out the obvious. That’s not a cheap shot. If I had kids in that school, I would be pretty pissed that someone opened the door or buzzed him in.

Additionally, I’ve yet to see one liberal policy that doesn’t treat children like commodities and not valued members of society. Children are the commodities and “teaching” is the product. Children exist in these liberal indoctrination centers to justify high salaries, huge benefits and zero accountability.

  21. I agree with all of you..Jenny, donh, Linda and others. When the country began to turn their back on God, He withdraws from the country. He is warning us a little at a time. I keep praying that things will turn back around.

Did anyone notice the faux concern Obama had for the people in Ct? He was reading an ipad or something similar. He would lose his place, and when he did he would wipe at his eye. One time he audibly answered “yeah” to someone. My guess someone in his ear.
He will never show true emotion….cause he has none that are real.

  22. These people were turned out of the institutions because of cost of care. There were just too many of them. It was only an excuse about them just being different. This was despicable and we can look forward toward the same thing happening in obamacare. Cost is what these liberals look at under the guise of compassion. The mentally ill are not reliable voters and to them there is no use in helping people whose vote they can’t buy. There are so many other people they can buy with that money.
