Take a Break from the Theme Parks and Discover the Rich History of Osceola County

You may think Kissimmee had little history before tourism came to the area, but did you know at one time Florida had more cattle than Texas? The state also had its own version of cowboys known as cow men or “cow hunters” who lived and roamed where Osceola County is today. At the brand-new Osceola County Welcome Center and History Museum, you and your family can explore the rich culture and history of Osceola County, learn about its early pioneers and discover the local flora and fauna that call this area home.

Located on U.S. Highway 192, the Osceola County Welcome Center and History Museum offers interactive exhibits, fun facts and a gift shop for the entire family to enjoy – both locals and tourists. Enter through a replica of the “Lady Osceola” steamboat to travel back to pioneer time. Once inside, visit a “swamp” where you can enjoy spotting the animals on display and learning the roles they play in the ecosystem. In addition, you can view exhibits that highlight the area’s first businesses, agricultural history and first settlements presented with fascinating artifacts. Kids can crawl through a gopher tortoise tunnel, try out a two-person “saw” and collect stamps from around the museum.

The Osceola County Welcome Center and History Museum, presented by the Osceola County Historical Society, is open seven days a week, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free. For even more fun, visit the nearby Pioneer Village & Museum and take a stroll through authentic buildings, including the Lanier “Cracker House” and a general store, that once occupied different areas of the county. Also on Saturday, December 8, don’t miss the Cracker Christmas event and celebrate the holidays pioneer-style!
