Centennial of Naval Aviation: First Trap
One hundred years ago at 11:01 a.m. 18 January 1911, Eugene Ely, a Curtiss Aeroplane Company employee made the first “trap” aboard the specially outfitted cruiser USS Pennsylvania.
Ely had taught himself to fly a used airplane he purchased from his employer (after Ely had crashed it trying to prove to his employer how easy flying was) and made his first successful flight in April 1910, less than a year before he went “to the boat”!
