Boustany Urges Senate Colleagues to Pass Needed Economic Stimulus Without Inefficient Spending

Washington, D.C.– U.S. Representative Charles W. Boustany, Jr., (R-Southwest Louisiana), today urged his colleagues in the Senate to vote in favor of the bi-partisan economic stimulus package, H.R. 5140 passed by the House.

“Loading this bill down with pet projects will only slow tax rebate checks to more than one and a half million Louisianans,” Boustany said. “The Senate should vote on the bi-partisan House passed bill that won overwhelming support without packing it with special interest payouts. Many of the projects are worthwhile, but they will not stimulate the economy. This bill must encourage economic growth.

The temporary economic growth plan passed by the House includes rebates of $300 to $1,200 for 117 million American families, as well has $50 billion in tax relief for small businesses. 1.6 million people in Louisiana would receive a tax rebate under the House passed bill, which passed with a vote of 385-35.

The Senate is expected to vote on its larger proposal on Wednesday night.
