Best of 2012 (Behind the Scenes): Drowning Elena on 'The Vampire Diaries'

In the May season 3 finale of The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev did some of the finest underwater acting ever in not one, but two drowning scenes — one that flashed back to the night Elena’s parents died and Stefan rescued her, and one in which Elena died after demanding that Stefan save Matt. Here, supervising producer Chris Grismer, who helped episode director John Behring helm the chill-inducing underwater sequence shot over three days, takes us inside the scene that changed the show forever. For more stories behind this year’s top TV and movie moments, click here for EW.com’s Best of 2012 (Behind the Scenes) coverage.

As told by: Chris Grismer

I started the actors training for the scene about two months before we shot. They had to train every weekend with dive instructors. Nina Dobrev was already PADI-certified, but those who weren’t had to become. They also had to learn how to act underwater for a long period of time without air: They had to learn how to do a scene and then get air between takes from a safety diver, who was never more than five or six feet away, instead of coming back up to the surface, which I think was pretty terrifying for them. Some of them wanted to swim to the surface between takes, and I had to explain to them that if you start at the surface and swim 20 feet down, you’re kinda almost out of air by the time we say “action.” [Laughs] And then they had to learn how to do it in an enclosed space. I don’t know if you’ve ever been underwater in an enclosed space, but your body just doesn’t want you in there. The actors have to be pretty brave and pretty strong. Nina Dobrev took to it so unbelievably well. She was amazing. I think in the first two weeks, I saw some video of her inside pretending to panic, and I was just blown away by it.  READ FULL STORY »

New York’s Times Square is getting a little bit Jersey for New Year’s Eve.

MTV says Jersey Shore stars Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley and comedian Jeff Dye will host the network’s live New Year’s Eve special from Times Square.

MTV’s Club NYE 2013 will also feature performances from Ke$ha, Ne-Yo, Sean Kingston, Rita Ora, and others. Ke$ha described the final night of the year as a time when people come together to celebrate “in a sweaty, drunken, dance-fueled orgy of bliss.”

Polizzi said she is hoping to use “a leopard bedazzled microphone” for her hosting duties.

The special is set to air at 11 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 31.

'Survivor: Philippines': Jeff Probst addresses jury fairness issue and says there are no more hidden immunity idols

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of ‘Survivor: Philippines’.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Abi keeps lying about having a hidden immunity idol, and it got me thinking: In the past, after idols have been used, you have put new ones back into play. Does that mean there actually are two idols out there replacing the ones Abi and Penner used after the merge, or did you decide not to recycle the idols this time?
JEFF PROBST:
Typically, once an idol is played we put another one back into the game. But this season, because we started with three, we decided that three was enough. There is a fine line between the fun and chaos an idol can bring about and putting yourself in a position where everybody is safe at Tribal Council! But because there have been so many twists and turns, the players never know what might be happening. They can make assumptions based on previous experience, but they’re never absolutely certain. READ FULL STORY »

[SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE LATEST AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM!!!]

Christmas came to Briarcliff on the latest American Horror Story: Asylum, which naturally meant several murders and a tree adorned with human hair and dentures. There was also a crazy man dressed as Santa, played by Deadwood‘s Ian McShane, as well as another virtuoso performance by Lily Rabe as the possessed Sister Mary Eunice. EW talked to co-creator Ryan Murphy about all this holiday fun.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I can’t believe this is your Christmas episode. You mentioned this last week but you wrote this character with Ian in mind and you never thought he’d do it, right?
RYAN MURPHY: Christmas and American Horror Story do not go together and so we were trying to figure out, What’s our version of Christmas? And the answer of course is a homicidal Santa. There’s a whole subgenre in horror dedicated to these psycho Santas. It’s a thing. So we decided let’s write somebody who’s so crazy they end up in Briarcliff.

I had heard Ian McShane really loved American Horror Story. So we wrote it and we were like, “Let’s send it to him and ask for a quick pass.” To my delight, he said yes. It was supposed to be one big thing, but instead we turned it into two because we had Ian.

Tonight’s episode of Criminal Minds marks the fourth time star Matthew Gray Gubler has stepped behind the camera for the show — and he’s happy to report that these days, he’s quite comfortable sitting in the director’s chair.

“It sounds like I’m cocky — I’m not a cocky fella — but they’ve all been really easy in that I like directing and I know what I’m doing, so it’s great,” says Gubler.

And he enjoys the process even more when in the chance to do something unique with his episode — as he did in this one, which features the team on the tail of a killer with strange “ritualistic” tendencies. “The ones before have been off the beaten path and worked. So [this time] we had even more opportunity to be unique, which made it fun,” says Gubler, who will direct another episode later this season. READ FULL STORY »

Vince Neil on learning to fly on 'The Aviators' and a planned reality series -- VIDEO

AVIATORS-VINCE-NEIL-01

Vince Neil and PBS may seem like unlikely collaborators, but the two have joined forces for a few episodes of television that come with sky-high expectations. PBS’ The Aviators — the Anthony Nalli-hosted docuseries that provides a behind-the-scenes look at airplanes and the people who fly, build, and otherwise obsess over them — is chronicling the journey of the 51-year-old Mötley Crüe frontman as he sets out to earn his pilot’s license. (Check local listings for air dates.)

His televised education won’t be completed at the conclusion of the second episode, though. EW has learned that Neil has signed a deal with FourPoints Television, which produces The Aviators, to star in a reality series that will follow him through the final stages of realizing his dream. (No network is attached yet.) Titled Vince Neil… Escapes, the travel adventure series will tag along with Neil as he works with a flight instructor, attempts to overcome obstacles with the FAA (Neil has two DUIs on his record, including one that resulted in a fatal accident), and jets off to hot spots in North America and the Caribbean. “It’s not about having a reality show,” says Neil. “But if it’s going to keep me flying, and I am basically getting paid to get better as a pilot, then absolutely! I’ll have that sea plane going to the Caribbean sooner than I thought.”

Below, Neil recounts his experience of learning to navigate a single-engine propeller plane on The Aviators. READ FULL STORY »

'Arrow': David Ramsey teases midseason finale moment 'bigger' than when 'Dexter' killed Rita

After a turn on Showtime’s Dexter as informant-turned-love interest Anton Briggs, David Ramsey knows how to protect the integrity of a good plot twist. But it didn’t stop him from giving out juicy teases about what awaits Arrow fans in the last two episodes of 2012.

“[After the midseason finale] you’re going to be left thinking, ‘No, they didn’t!’ It’s that big,” says Ramsey, who plays Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) confidant/partner in crime Diggle on the CW series.

In just seven episodes, Arrow has already delivered a few shocking moments — one of the biggest being when Diggle learned of Oliver’s secret identity. So how will this midseason cliffhanger measure up? “[On] Dexter, they had this huge cliffhanger at the end of one of the seasons where they killed off [Dexter's wife] Rita…It’s going to be bigger than that,” says Ramsey. “Huge.”
