'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic': A spooky exclusive clip and art

MLP-EXCL

Are ponies afraid of the dark?

Not generally — but they do get frightened after hearing some spooky stories. That’s what happens in this week’s episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which follows Cutie Mark Crusader Scootaloo as she battles nightmares — night-mares? — born of Rainbow Dash’s scary campfire stories. Look closely in the following sneak peek, and you might just spot Princess Luna — the younger sister of Princess Celestia, who’s in charge of raising the moon and guarding the night. Could Luna help vanquish Scootaloo’s bad dreams? We won’t find out until tomorrow morning — but in the meantime, here’s the clip:

A great response to 'I'm Bored'

Tags: , , Books

Bloomsbury USA

Do your children bore easily? Are they Minecrafting themselves into oblivion? Has the conclusion of iCarly left them with big Spencer-sized holes in their lives? Give them Unbored: The Essential Field Guide to Serious Fun (Bloomsbury USA). This book, co-authored by Joshua Glenn and Elizabeth Larsen, offers scores of cool ideas for grade school kids on up. In the vein of The Dangerous Book for Boys and the British magazine The Idler, Unbored  will teach kids how to make their own fun: “create instead of consume.”  Right in the first chapter, the authors offer up a deranged pastime called “The Game,” which our family immediately latched on to. I would tell you more about it, but I don’t want to spoil anything.

The book is divided into four chapters: “You,” “Home,” “Society” and “Adventure.” Each chapter includes instructions for fun both low tech (such as short-sheeting a bed) and high tech (such as how to create your own video game). A cool feature is the coded messages throughout the book (the key is in the back). It’s organized a bit like a magazine, including how-tos, essays and interviews with unbored notables such as the editor of the aforementioned The Idler, who advocates for idler families (“not rich in money, but rich in time.”) Want to make a snow fort? Check Unbored. Got an old, skipping vinyl album? Unbored will show you how to make it into a bowl.

And while you may give your child this book to exert a certain sort of wholesome control over their leisure time, know that there is an entire section devoted to farting games. Which certainly please my kids. There are also sections that advise kids on how to train their grownups to “be a ninja,” “Stop saying you’re awesome,” and “curse without cursing.” All worthy pursuits, damn it.

Get ready for your afternoon cry.

Sports Illustrated Kids has announced the winner of their 2012 Sports Illustrated Kids SportsKids of the Year, and the deserving winners are brothers Conner and Cayden Long.

Cayden suffers from cerebral palsy, but Conner – like a lot of brothers – just wanted to play sports with his little bro, and wasn’t about to let anything get in the way of that. So he didn’t: The brothers compete in triathlons together, “with Conner towing Cayden behind in a raft during the swimming leg, towing him behind his bike during the cycling portion, and pushing him during the run,” according to the SI website.

At the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year ceremony last night that recognized LeBron James, Conner and Cayden were told they have full scholarships from Duke’s head coach for when they’re older, and James told Conner and Cayden that he was flying them to Miami to ‘meet the guys.’” The brothers even met music royalty: Jay-Z and Beyoncé also wanted to talk to the Longs.

Check out the brothers’ inspiring video below to see what got everyone so excited: READ FULL STORY »

Best of 2012 (Behind the Scenes): The 'Grand Theft Auto'-style game that was almost in 'Wreck-It Ralph' -- EXCLUSIVE

The makers of Wreck-It Ralph – Walt Disney Animation’s joyful love letter to the quarter-popping world of arcades — created three fictionalized videogames for its pixel-perfect characters to super jump and power slide through. There was Fix-It Felix Jr., a Donkey Kong-style game in which the film’s titular hero (voiced by John C. Reilly) is the high-rise smashing villain; Hero’s Duty, a space aliens first-person shooter akin to the high sci-fi style of games like Halo; and Sugar Rush, a racing game that’s like a candy-coated version of Mario Kart and plays home to the film’s other ne’er-do-well protagonist, wannabe racer Vanellope von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman).

Each of the faux titles was meant to evoke a specific gaming experience, but well into pre-production on Wreck-It Ralph, the filmmakers were planning on including a fourth game designed to capture the uninhibited open worlds of games like The Sims and Grand Theft AutoIts name: Extreme EZ Livin’ 2.

Below, producer Clark Spencer explains how this game would have fit into Wreck-It Ralph‘s story — and why it was cut from the film. But first, check out an exclusive first look at concept art for what Extreme EZ Livin’ 2 would have looked like had it made it into the film (click the image to embiggen).

It’s the first family road trip — ever! In the new trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods, the titular caveperson family is forced to turn to a more advanced human named Guy (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) for help in finding a new cave when theirs is destroyed thanks to a little thing called plate tectonics. Paterfamilias Grug (voiced by Nicolas Cage) isn’t exactly keen on Guy and his hifalutin ideas, but his daughter Eep (voiced by Emma Stone) is far more open minded.

‘Tis the season for yule-logging! (Fa la la la la, la la la la)

This weekend, Disney Channel will air a holiday-themed episode of its new series Dog with a Blog. “Bark! The Herald Angels Sing” finds the blended Jennings clan celebrating its first Christmas as a family — which, naturally, leads to a few butting heads.

Take this exclusive clip, for example, in which parents Bennett (Regan Burns) and Ellen (Beth Littleford) begin battling for holiday cookie supremacy. “Suffice it to say, I’ve had my fill of holiday cookies for the year,” Littleford tells EW via email. “And I’m still picking crumbs out of my bra.”

iCarly lives!

Well, sort of. Nickelodeon announced today that it’s given the greenlight to a new series called Sam & Cat. The comedy will star Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande as Sam Puckett and Cat Valentine, two characters who originally appeared on iCarly and Victorious, respectively. Sam & Cat sees the titular two becoming unlikely roommates who launch an after-school babysitting business. Like iCarly and Victorious, the new series was dreamed up by kiddie hitmaker Dan Schneider.

“Jennette and Ariana are adored by our audience, and it’s great to unite these talented actresses in this hilarious new comedy from Dan Schneider,” Nickelodeon exec Russell Hicks said in a statement.  “This show promises to deliver on what our audience loves most about these two favorite characters — laugh-out-loud humor and non-stop adventure, and is sure to be a compelling new chapter for our new comedic duo.”

Sam & Cat will hit TV screens in 2013. Production on the series begins this January.

Guess who’s back?

In October, Friendship Is Magic head writer Meghan McCarthy told EW that the show’s third season would see a favorite villain returning “in a very, very awesome way.” We know now that the pony in question is none other than Trixie, a conceited traveling magician last seen fleeing from Ponyville in a puff of poorly-conjured smoke.

In “Magic Duel” — which airs tomorrow — “The Great and Powerful” Trixie reappears, bent on getting revenge on Twilight Sparkle and her pals. Watch the exclusive clip below to learn what happened to Trixie after she was run out of town — and how the magician punishes poor Pinkie Pie when she dares to speak out against the wicked pony.

'iCarly' series finale draws strong ratings

i-carly-igoodbye

In its 2009 heyday, Nickelodeon’s iCarly was drawing massive ratings that would have delighted any network — let alone a basic cable channel. (The two-part special “iQuit iCarly” drew nearly 10 million viewers when it first aired, making it one of 2009′s top 30 cable telecasts.)

And while the series’s finale last Friday didn’t exactly break any records, its numbers are very solid: Nick reports that the hour-long episode drew 6.4 million viewers and strong demo numbers, making it November’s top telecast among kids and tweens. All in all, Nickelodeon ended the month as basic cable’s top network with kids 2-11, as well as total viewers. Spaghetti tacos for all!
