S. 3789 is expected to be considered on the House floor on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, under suspension of the rules, requiring a two-thirds majority vote for passage.  This legislation was introduced by Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) on September 15, 2010. 

S. 3789 would prohibit federal, state, and local government agencies from displaying the Social Security numbers of individuals on any check issued for payment by that government agency.  This provision would apply to all government checks being issued three years from the date of this bill being enacted.

The bill would also prohibit federal, state, or local governments from employing prisoners in any capacity that would provide them with access to Social Security numbers of any individuals.  This provision would go into effect one year after the date of the bill being enacted.
