Washington, DC – A structural reorganization by Amtrak intended to improve the performance and accountability of the rail service will be the focus of a hearing Wednesday by the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, chaired by U.S. Rep. John L. Mica (R-FL).

Although Congress designed Amtrak to be operated and managed as a for-profit corporation, it continues to receive federal appropriations to support its services. In fiscal year 2012, Amtrak received $1.418 billion in federal grants. Throughout its 41-year history, Amtrak has been the subject of many proposals for reform and revitalization of its structure and mission, including by Amtrak’s Inspector General.

In November 2011, Amtrak released its Strategic Plan FY2011-FY2015, and is undergoing a structural reorganization based on that plan. This ongoing reorganization process is projected to be fully implemented by the end of FY 2013.

On Wednesday, the Committee will hear from the Inspector General and Amtrak on how the IG’s recommendations are being implemented and the extent to which they are being addressed in the structural reorganization.
