Entitlements and Welfare State a Bigger Problem than Fiscal Cliff

Cato scholars have already explained how the fiscal cliff tax increases will have a harmful impact on incentives to work, save, invest and create jobs. But Cato scholar Daniel J. Mitchell says that going over the fiscal cliff isn't nearly as big of a crisis as the ticking time bomb of entitlement programs and the welfare state. "If government keeps growing faster than the private economy," says Mitchell, "at some point America will experience a Greek-style fiscal collapse."

Ignore North Korea's Temper Tantrums

North Korea is on the verge of launching another rocket this month, a move that the United States has called "a highly provocative act that threatens peace and security in the region." No doubt the North is pleased with this reaction. But Cato scholar Doug Bandow argues that instead of encouraging Pyongyang's recklessness through acknowledgement, Washington and its allies should have responded with a collective yawn.
