  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Representative Sutton Votes to Spur Economic Recovery

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Betty Sutton (D-OH) voted to pass H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The legislation aims to create up to four million jobs and protect existing jobs by investing in infrastructure, promoting energy efficiency and science, assisting the unemployed and providing assistance for local fiscal stabilization. The bill will also provide an immediate tax cut for 95% of American workers.

Rep. Sutton released the following statement:

"This economic recovery is aimed squarely at restoring the promise of the middle class. For too long, working families have struggled to pay bills, maintain health coverage and keep their jobs. At the same time, states are straining to provide essential services for residents in need. Overall, this legislation seeks to provide short term help to those who have been hurt the most by the economic downturn, and long term solutions to put our economy on solid footing for years to come.

Ohio has been hit particularly hard. This past December, the unemployment rate was a staggering 7.8 percent. I am supporting this legislation because it will provide Ohio with critical resources to address our challenges, including an estimated $2.3 billion to help our Governor stabilize the budget. Another $2.8 million will go directly to Ohio's Medicaid program to help our neediest residents. And school districts within the 13th District will receive roughly $85 million for construction, Title 1-A, IDEA, education modernization, renovation and repairs. I have been a staunch advocate for investing in our nation's infrastructure and helping to create jobs. I am happy to report that this bill will also provide $1.5 billion for infrastructure projects to repair and improve Ohio's roads and bridges while creating immediate job opportunities.

I am also pleased that we secured a critical provision requiring that American-made steel and other goods be used to ensure that we are investing in America's workers and our economy.

The time to act on strengthening our nation's economy is now. I am confident that this comprehensive legislation will provide Ohio and our Nation with the opportunity to improve our financial footing for 2009 and beyond."
