  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Rep. Sutton to Receive National Urban League 2011 Congressional Leadership Award

Today, Congresswoman Betty Sutton will receive the 2011 National Urban League Congressional Leadership Award in recognition of her leadership and steadfast commitment to public service. The Congressional Leadership Award will be presented by Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, during their annual Legislative Policy Conference.

"It is such an honor to be recognized by the National Urban League, whose work empowers the lives of so many in our communities," said Rep. Sutton. "The National Urban League and its local affiliates understand the urgent need for job creation. It is a pleasure to work with this dynamic organization to foster job growth and economic opportunities for the people of Northeast Ohio."

"The Lorain County Urban League, its Board and Staff, whole-heartedly congratulate Congresswoman Sutton on receiving the Congressional Leadership Award," said Fred Wright, President and CEO of the Lorain County Urban League. "We are so excited for her and appreciate all of her hard work. Congresswoman Sutton is a champion for Northeast Ohio and her district, and we look forward to working with her in pursuit of equality for all."

Rep. Sutton worked with the Lorain County Urban League to strengthen the Urban Youth Empowerment Program that uses education, work-related activities and community service to assist young people in gaining employment skills that lead to careers. Rep. Sutton also helped to bring more than 1,400 youth jobs to Summit County last year. These jobs provided local youth participants with valuable experience that has exponential effects on lifetime earning potential and productivity. In addition, with Rep. Sutton's robust support, the Akron Urban League was awarded about $2 million to help bridge the digital divide by giving residents the tools they need to help build and compete in a new 21st century economy.

The National Urban League is a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment to improve the living standards in underserved communities. Founded in 1910, the National Urban League operates through more than 100 local affiliates in 36 states and the District of Columbia, and provides direct services that advance the lives of more than 2 million people nationwide.

The theme for this year's three day conference is "Jobs and America's Future," and will also include The State of Black America Town Hall Event to address economic recovery and the future of jobs in America. Rep. Sutton, an outspoken advocate on job creation, will meet with leaders from local affiliates to discuss their proposals to get America back to work.
