  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Rep. Sutton Announces YouthBuild Grant for Akron Summit Community Action, Inc.

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Betty Sutton (D-Ohio) announced that Akron Summit Community Action, Inc. will be receiving a YouthBuild grant to provide education and training to 30 additional at-risk young people in Northeast Ohio. Through the YouthBuild program, at-risk youth acquire leadership skills and become involved in community service while building and renovating affordable housing within their communities.

"I am very pleased that Akron Summit Community Action will be able to use this grant to prepare our at-risk teenagers and young adults for a constructive and promising future," said Rep. Sutton. "Education and training are so vital to our communities, and this grant will help at-risk youth in Northeast Ohio obtain their diplomas or GED's while preparing them for a career in the construction industry."

Participants in YouthBuild programs include individuals who have been in the juvenile justice system, youth aging out of foster care, high school dropouts and others. In addition to receiving academic and occupational skill training, these young people develop leadership skills and participate in community service opportunities. Many YouthBuild participants are also learning "green" building techniques, assisting with retrofitting existing homes, and discovering how to help make their communities sustainable and environmentally friendly.

"We are very pleased that this grant will allow hands-on construction training, education and leadership skills training to 30 additional at-risk, low-income men and women ages 18 to 24 with classes starting in September 2010," said Robert Dowdell, YouthBuild Director at Akron Summit Community Action, Inc. "YouthBuild has successfully empowered program participants to overcome negative behaviors and attain achievable educational and employment goals. Completing the program provides future opportunities in secondary education and/or employment as a means of promoting economic self-sufficiency for themselves and their families."

Since the program began in 2002, 54 youth have earned their GED, five earned their high school diploma, 20 youth attended post-secondary institutions and 10 earned continuing education credits through the University of Akron Workforce Development Continuing Education Department. The YouthBuild program has built two single-family homes, one garage and has rehabilitated six single-family homes. To date, 30 youth obtained employment as a result of participating in the YouthBuild program.
