Runyan Tours Lockheed Martin Moorestown With Armed Services Subcommittee Chair

Washington, D.C. – On Friday September 7th, Congressman Jon Runyan (R-NJ) hosted Congressman Michael Turner (R-OH), the Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, on a tour of Lockheed Martin’s campus in Moorestown.  Both Congressmen Runyan and Turner toured this premier defense facility and were briefed on the U.S. Navy’s Aegis Combat System programs and Lockheed Martin’s crucial role in ballistic missile defense.

“Lockheed Martin is an important part of Southern New Jersey’s economy and this tour was a great opportunity to show the Chairman the importance of this critical facility and the positive impact it has on our national security,” said Congressman Runyan.  “The Aegis system is not only crucial to the nation’s defenses, it is vital for the local and regional economy.  More than 3000 individuals are employed by the Aegis Program.  I look forward to working with Chairman Turner and Lockheed Martin to ensure the continued success of this program.”

Opened in 1954, Lockheed Martin sits on 395 acres in Moorestown and employees more than 4,100 people throughout Burlington County.  While on the Lockheed Martin Campus Congressman Runyan and Turner also visited the Navy’s Vice Admiral James H. Doyle Combat Systems Engineering Development Site (CSEDS), locally known as the ‘Cruiser in the Cornfield’, for which Congressman Runyan secured $33.498 million in Military Construction funding in the FY2013 National Defense Authorization Act and the FY13 Military Construction and VA Appropriations bills.

“Jon Runyan was a fierce defender of the workers at Moorestown’s Lockheed facility during this year’s NDAA process.  As the Chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, I know firsthand how important the work at this facility is to our national security and that of our allies,” said Congressman Turner.  “I look forward to continuing to work with Congressman Runyan to ensure the safety and security of the homeland and the American people.”

Congressman Runyan is an active member of the House Armed Services Committee, House Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Natural Resources Committee.  In addition to these committees, Rep. Runyan was appointed to the House Armed Services Committee Panel on Business Challenges within the Defense Industry.
