U.S. Embassy Joins ABC Hospital to Promote Breast Cancer Awareness

Mexico City, October 26, 2012—The Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City Laura Dogu joined Dr. Gerardo Castorena, head of the Breast Cancer Clinic at ABC Hospital (Observatorio), the San Diego Charger Girls cheerleaders, and other prominent guests today at the ABC Hospital for a presentation of the hospital’s breast cancer awareness (BCA) programs.

“I am pleased to be a part of this initiative to highlight the importance for women of taking proactive measures to ensure their good health, including through regular breast cancer examinations,” Ms. Dogu said.  “It is satisfying to see such high level public-private partnership through the participation of the NFL’s Diversity Council and the League’s BCA pink initiatives, not to mention participation by the San Diego Chargers cheerleaders.  As today’s multi-national event shows, breast cancer knows no boundaries, and men and women around the world are united in taking on this disease.”

“The goal is to give information, updated and reliable on breast cancer in Mexico, emphasizing the importance of self examination and of healthy lifestyles to reduce the number of those affected by the sickness in the near future, increase the percentage of timely detection and decrease mortality rates. The idea is to deliver this information to as many adolescents as possible in elementary and high schools nationwide,” said Gerardo Castorena, head of the Breast Cancer Clinic at ABC Hospital.

The ABC Medical Center has a 125-year tradition of excellence in medical care, beginning with an early grant from USAID and support from the British government.  Knowing that breast cancer is a major health concern in Mexico, ABC has developed a breast cancer awareness and early detection program, which will serve the broad community (not only those in more privileged socio-economic positions), which will be launched soon.  This breakfast program will present the program to guests and press.
