Bolingbrook High School, the first high school in the state to meet national environmental standards, will be recognized today by a Congressional panel in Chicago.

BHS facilities director Michael Lopez will testify today before the panel to kick off the U.S. Green Building Council’s International Conference and Expo in Chicago, according to a release from Congresswoman Judy Biggert’s office.

Biggert, R-Hinsdale, invited Lopez to the hearing after visiting BHS last month, when school officials showed off the school’s hallway lighting systems that brightens or dims based on sunlight; its air cooling condensation system that saves water; and ground wells used to irrigate its football fields, among other green efforts.

Valley View District Spokesman Larry Randa said Bolingbrook High School was the first high school in Illinois to gain LEED certification, a national accreditation that recognizes leadership in environmentally friendly design.
