On Wednesday, the Oklahoma House of Representatives and the Senate swore in their newly elected and re-elected members in preparation of the 2013 legislative session. It was a moment for those elected to public office to savor their success, share their victory with family and friends who came to watch the ceremonies and be cordial with their new colleagues.

State Question 766 poses one of the most drastic questions for voters to consider in state history. The language of this state question requires voters to say either yes, they don’t want a tax increase, or no, they do want one.

Public safety is a core function of government. It should be one of the top priorities of every elected official in Oklahoma. On Nov. 6, voters in Oklahoma County will be asked to assess how their public safety is being handled in the county by choosing a sheriff for the next four years.

OUR VIEW: Rhodes rises to the top
On Tuesday, Republican voters in Oklahoma County will be asked to choose between two men to serve as the next court clerk for the county. Tim Rhodes and Rep. Charles Key came out of four Republicans in the June primary election to vie for the spot. The primary runoff election will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

When Gov. Frank Keating and his wife Cathy led a huge fundraising effort in the 1990s to see the completion of the Capitol dome, hundreds of regular Oklahomans rallied to the cause. Children collected pennies and donors gave what they could to see the project come to fruition.
