  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Rep. Sutton Announces Assistance to Firefighters Grants to Fire Departments in Parma Heights and Cuyahoga Falls

Today, Congresswoman Betty Sutton (OH-13) announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency is awarding grants in the amount of $69,920 to the Cuyahoga Falls Fire Department and $71,923 to the Parma Heights Fire Department through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The grants will be used to purchase much needed equipment to increase their capacity to respond to fire and related hazards.

"These Assistance to Firefighters grants will help provide our fire departments with the equipment and resources they need to protect our communities," Rep. Sutton said. "With tight budget constraints, fire departments need these grants now more than ever to purchase necessary, vital equipment."

"Given our financial situation, this award couldn't have come at a better time," Parma Heights Fire Chief Bryan Sloan said. "This grant will be used for EKG heart monitors and we appreciate Congresswoman Sutton's support in this and of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program."

"This grant will be used to purchase turnout gear, a very basic need that we wouldn't be able to purchase without the Assistance to Firefighters Grant," Cuyahoga Falls Fire Chief Paul Moledor said. "Congresswoman Sutton has been instrumental in keeping the program going and we appreciate all of her support."

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is an integral part of the national effort to strengthen overall preparedness and respond to related hazards. The AFG program provides funding for the purchase of emergency response equipment, personal safety equipment, training, firefighting trucks and emergency vehicles.

The purpose of the AFG is to make direct awards to fire departments and EMS organizations to enhance their capacity to protect the health and safety of the public. The awards are made on a competitive basis to applicants whose requests best reflect the purpose and priority of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
