Biggert Votes Against Debt Increase

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) today voted against H.R. 1954, which would implement the President’s request for a $2.4 trillion dollar increase in the national debt limit – from $14.3 trillion – without any spending restrictions.  Biggert issued the following statement:

“The President asked for a clean vote to extend the federal debt limit, and the House gave it to him.  It failed.  Now it’s time to focus on what taxpayers want – a fiscal policy that stops the out-of-control spending.

“The majority of Americans know that our debt is draining the economy of jobs, capital, and confidence.  They want responsible action in Washington, not more vague promises or another blue ribbon panel to make deficit recommendations that continue to be ignored.

“Instead of treating this vote as a foregone conclusion, the President should treat it as a wake-up call, and use his position to lead on spending cuts – not fight them.  It’s time to get this economy moving again.”
