Eva Mendes on the Best (and Worst!) Beauty Advice She's Ever Taken

Updated Dec 6 2012 - 1:00pm · Posted by · 0 comments

With enviable waves like Eva Mendes's it's no surprise she's lending her hair to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths campaign. The actress recently hosted a Twitter chat with the brand, where she answered a few of our questions, as well as shared some of her top hair and makeup tips.

When it comes to the best beauty advice she's ever received, Eva gives credit to Sophia Loren: "Beauty is 50% what you've got & 50% what people think you've got," she said. And we couldn't help but wonder if the gorgeous actress ever took bad beauty advice. It turns out, she did. She counts her beauty look from the Ghost Rider premiere among her not-so-favorite red-carpet moments.

Eva was also full of other great advice of her own. Her quick fix for a bad hair day? "Definitely throwing it up in a high bun, with a beautiful scarf as a distraction," she tweeted. And as for her day-to-day makeup look, Eva swears by light foundation with a heavy moisturizer, a natural lip balm, and a light bronzer.

Pantone Goes For the Green With Its 2013 Color of the Year

Updated Dec 6 2012 - 10:55am · Posted by · 0 comments

Tell your tangerine (2012's Pantone color of the year) to tango right out the door, because the color experts at Pantone have just named emerald the 2013 color of the year. Described as lively, radiant, and lush, the color was seen on the runways of Stella McCartney (eyeliner), Christian Dior (eye shadow), Marimekko (eye shadow), and Kenzo (nails and eye shadow, pictured above). "Symbolically, emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal, and rejuvenation, which is so important in today's complex world," Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said. "This powerful and appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors."

Emerald is such a versatile color because it's a new kind of neutral. It works well in both warm and cool temperatures, and pops on a variety of different skin tones and eye colors. Wear it with peach, rose, or aubergine for a complementary effect, or swipe on your nails when you need a color boost, but don't want something too overpowering. In addition, just as Sephora and Pantone linked up for 2012 with its Sephora + Pantone color collection, the beauty brands will be at it again for 2013; look for the launch of the line exclusively at Sephora this March.

Why Now Is the Best Time to Deep Condition

Updated Dec 6 2012 - 4:07pm · Posted by · 1 comment

It's the most wonderful time of the year — and not just because the holidays are around the corner. It's the time to whip your hair back into seriously healthy shape. "Now is when you'll start to see the damage left behind from the Summer," says celebrity stylist Mark Townsend, who has worked with stars like Natalie Portman and Mariah Carey. No matter where you spend your Winter, there is one thing you should add to your hair care regimen: deep conditioning.

"Make sure you've got a good conditioner," Townsend says. Something that's deep penetrating with lots of moisture. Yes to Carrots Pampering Conditioner ($16) is a great option, especially if you also need to clarify.

The easiest way to deep condition is to just tend to your hair first in the shower. "Wash and then leave your conditioner in while you do everything else," Townsend explains. "Rinse the conditioner out with cold water and you're set." But if you want something a little more substantial, try a hot oil mask or pick up a deep conditioner. Molton Brown Mer-rouge Deep Conditioning Mask ($40) will easily get the job done.
