This workshop will guide participants through the process of building a small wind turbine from scratch. Brief sessions each day on wind generator theory will be followed by shop sessions. The workshop group will construct one to three working wind generators. Approximately three-quarters of this workshop will be hands-on construction of wind turbines.

Join Eric Lantz of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for an examination of the issues related to social acceptance of wind energy. This discussion will focus on recent research on stress effects of wind turbine obstruction lighting, including how this analysis approach may help quantify the impacts of other stress-related impacts of wind energy development. Lantz will also discuss current technology improvements to reduce wind turbine noise and the first public overview of recent National Renewable Energy Laboratory research on the potential market impact of the following deployment barriers: radar, permitting, and wildlife impacts. The workshop will convene a group of participants who will:

  • Explore the role for and types of information needed to support appropriate, effective, and durable siting decisions on community- and grid-scale wind power projects.
  • Identify and discuss the key questions and central information needs for effective decision-making, and the methods for developing and applying that information such as:
    • What is the role of technical and scientific information in wind development?
    • What issues are amendable to information that is either site-specific, regionally-specific, or generic in nature?
    • What are the most important informational needs when determining whether a proposed project is appropriately sited?
    • Which types and sources of information are useful and effective?
    • How can stakeholders engage in the development and use of technical information to ensure that it is legitimate, widely accepted, and salient?
    • What is needed to maximize efficiency in the development and use of information?
    • Who should develop and deliver this information?
  • Draft a plan including next steps to implement and institutionalize the development and use of information for appropriate wind energy development.

Space is limited to 60 participants. To apply, complete the pre-registration survey by Friday, October 12, 2012.
