  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Congresswoman Betty Sutton Responds to State of the Union Address

Congresswoman Sutton gave the following statement in response to President Bush's State of the Union address tonight:

"Tonight we heard President Bush speak a lot about the 'security and prosperity' of our nation. Unfortunately, his proposals offer us little of either. While he grudgingly acknowledges the many concerns facing our working families in this country, his rhetoric is simply not matched by his actions. As has been said, 'Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I'll tell you what you believe.'

This President often talks about bipartisanship and opportunity just as he did tonight, but words alone are not adequate to address the challenges we face. So when we hear the President call for more bipartisanship, I wonder why he continues to block our bipartisan efforts to insure our nation's children. Twice now, we have brought strong bipartisan legislation to the President that would help insure 10 million American children, and we have received two vetoes in return. The 20,000 children in Ohio who would receive health insurance under our proposal certainly would like to know where his commitment to bipartisanship is in this.

He argues for passage of more so-called Free Trade Agreements to 'level the playing field' in the global marketplace. This sounds nice and he can package it as he wants, but the American people know free trade has been anything but free. The costs have been seen with a soaring trade deficit, millions of American jobs lost, a surge in unsafe toys and food imports, and a decline in our national security interest with a growing inability to produce here at home. If the President really wanted to level the playing field, he would work with us to develop a new trade policy that fixes the broken global trading system, rather than pursuing his chosen path which will continue to leave our workers and businesses at an unfair disadvantage.

The American people understand the reality of the difficulties our nation faces. Tonight the President had a chance to address their concerns, but we only heard some nice rhetoric. This means nothing to Ohio's families without action to back it up. The American people have far too often heard the right promises made. I urge the President to act with us to deliver to the American people solutions to strengthen this great nation and allow us to all move forward together."
