Washington, D.C. – U. S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today praised the Senate Judiciary Committee’s approval of Magistrate Judge Anthony J. Battaglia to serve as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of California. Senator Boxer recommended Judge Battaglia to President Obama, and the Judiciary Committee approved his nomination unanimously. The nomination next goes before the full Senate for consideration.

Senator Boxer said, “I am pleased the Senate Judiciary Committee has approved experienced Judge Anthony Battaglia for the federal bench. Judge Battaglia has earned respect throughout the legal community during his years of service as a magistrate judge in the Southern District, and he will be a strong addition to the district court bench.”

Since 1993, Battaglia has served as a magistrate judge in the Southern District of California, where he handles preliminary criminal proceedings, misdemeanor pleas and sentencing, felony guilty pleas and other matters in San Diego. Before becoming a judge, he was a litigator in private practice. Battaglia is the immediate past president of the Federal Magistrate Judges Association.

Judge Battaglia earned his bachelor’s degree from the United States International University, which is now Alliant International University. He received his law degree from the California Western School of Law.
