Reaction of U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert to the President's Address to Congress

“The President was upbeat and confident tonight, and that is so important in this difficult time.  We need to restore the confidence of the American people in our economy and our future, and his speech was inspirational.

"I probably agreed with about 90 percent of the goals the President laid-out tonight, but I have to add that the devil is always in the details.

"I agree that we must get credit flowing again, but I would have liked to hear more specifics about the proposed new lending fund.  If it’s another taxpayer-funded bail-out with no accountability or transparency, my constituents aren’t going to be happy.

"I agree we must end our dependence on foreign oil, but I don’t think we should pick and choose the winners, leaving important safe, clean alternatives like nuclear by the wayside.

"There are many other goals I agree with: ending Medicare fraud, killing federal programs that don’t work, and stopping subsidies to agribusinesses.  There are so many things on which I want to work together with him.

"The President called for bipartisanship, and I am with him on these goals.  I am hopeful he can convince Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to be as willing to work with our side of the aisle as he is.”
