Utah Department of Public Safety

Welcome to the Utah Department of Public Safety

DPSFender BenderThe Utah Highway Patrol is asking drivers who are involved in a minor "fender-bender" type collision to please move your vehicle off the interstate, to the nearest exit, before calling law enforcement. In recent years, Utah has seen a drastic increase in both, the amount of vehicles traveling our roadways and secondary crashes due to congestion following minor collisions. It is essential that we clear Utah interstates of minor collisions, to prevent minor crashes escalating into major tragedies.

Per Utah State Traffic Code 41-6a-401(2)(a)(i) the driver of a motor vehicle involved in a minor collision may move off the freeway before calling law enforcement... moving the vehicle will not affect the determination of fault in the accident.

Our number one concern is for the safety of both the motoring public and our officers. Please help us to meet this important goal.
The Utah Department of Public Safety provides a variety of public safety services such as law enforcement, communications, criminal identification, regulatory licensing, criminal and arson investigation, forensic analysis, training, safety education and emergency management.

We are committed to continuous improvement as we focus on our mission to provide a safe and secure environment for all people in Utah. We value knowledge, service, professionalism, courage, integrity and teamwork.

We appreciate Governor Gary Herbert's vision, leadership, and commitment to improve the quality of life for everyone in Utah. Please contact us to share any comments or questions you may have. We welcome your feedback and look forward to the opportunity to serve you.
