Each week our panel of experts picks a different National Jukebox selection to highlight.
This week’s selection:
"Stop! Look! Listen! (To the music of the band)," Performed by the American Quartet with Billy Murray, recorded November 26, 1920.
This rousing number is caught in a stylistic quandary—rhythmically and harmonically it sounds like a tune from circa 1910. The use of the adjective “jazzy” raises an eyebrow, and then the “jazz” trumpet towards the end makes certain the anachronistic nature of this very fun recording.
