Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s announcement that federally funded health researchers will be permitted to work with stem cells:
 
           “Thankfully, the President has reversed a flawed policy.  To let cells created for fertility treatments that would otherwise be destroyed go to waste is simply tragic.  They have so much potential to alleviate the suffering of those with conditions like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cancer.  Ongoing studies also find that they could become replacement skin for burn victims, nerve tissue for those with spinal cord injuries, insulin producing cells for diabetics, and conceivably whole organs for people needing new hearts or kidneys.  I think researchers should go where sound science leads them, not where politicians dictate, and I’m glad the President agrees.”
