Biggert, Benedictine University Aim to Empower Women in the Workforce

Lisle, IL – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) today visited Benedictine University to announce the recent approval by Congress of funds for the creation of a new Masters Degree program aimed at promoting women’s economic leadership in underserved communities.  Biggert secured $250,000 for the initiative in H.R. 3288, the 2010 minibus appropriations bill signed by the President last month.  The funds will enable Benedictine University to launch a Master of Science in Leadership Program (M.S.L.) in conjunction with its newly-created Women’s Entrepreneurial Education and Workforce Development Initiative.

“I applaud Benedictine University for its work on this innovative program, especially when so many women in underserved communities are reaching out for an opportunity such as this,” said Biggert, a senior member of the House Education and Labor Committee.  “At a time when job opportunities are harder than ever to find, this program will provide valuable job training and professional development to women from all economic backgrounds.  And by offering this degree, more women will have an opportunity to equip themselves with the skills and tools they need to become successful economic leaders and entrepreneurs.  This will be a tremendous asset to our community, and I am proud to be part of this effort.”

Joining Biggert to make the announcement were Benedictine President William Carroll and Tanesha D. H. Pittman, Executive Director of Adult Programs at Benedictine University.

“While women in the workforce have come a long way in leveling the field with their male counterparts, much work still needs to be done,” said Carroll.  “The Benedictine University Women’s Leadership Program provides women the skills and confidence necessary to rise to the next level.  I thank Congressman Biggert for her partnership and support for this exciting project.”

The M.S.L. program, created by women for women, will provide women with the instruction and resources needed to successfully launch, maintain, or grow a small business.  An accelerated program, consisting of 16 four-hour courses, will offer coursework in a range of areas, including Self Efficacy, Diversity & Inclusion, Mentorship & Networking, and Financial Literacy.  Women in underserved populations will be recruited from across the Chicago area to participate in the program.  In addition to coursework, those enrolled in the program will receive mentors and personal academic coaches.

“We are elated that Congresswoman Biggert advocated for the women and workforce development initiative, as this funding will allow our institution to provide scholarships for many underrepresented and underserved women who desire to advance their level of education and prepare to lead our nation.  Without Congresswoman Biggert’s support, it would be more challenging to launch this new and innovative program,” said Pittman.

Focused on diversity, Benedictine University is an independent Catholic University with nearly 5,300 students.  More than 30% of the new undergraduate students are minorities, and 58.3% of the student population is female.
