Congressman Sires Congratulates Bayonne and Jersey City on Receiving COPS Hiring Program Grants

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Sires congratulated Bayonne and Jersey City on their receipt of COPS Hiring Program grants to hire or rehire law enforcement officers.  The City of Bayonne will receive a grant for $1,125,000 to support nine positions, and the City of Jersey City will receive a grant for $1,875,000 to support fifteen positions.

“The COPS Hiring Program helps ensure that our police departments have the officers they need to keep our communities safe,” said Congressman Sires. “I am pleased to hear that this money will promote community policing in New Jersey and support local jobs.”

The U.S. Department of Justice awarded nearly $9.5 million in COPS Hiring Program grants to aid police departments throughout New Jersey.  Nationwide, the Department awarded grants to 221 local law enforcement agencies.  A new provision under the grant program requires that this year’s new hires be military veterans.
