WASHINGTON, DC – President Obama today signed into law H.R. 6131, a bill to reauthorize the U.S. Safe Web Act of 2006. This legislation, spearheaded by Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Mary Bono Mack (R-CA) and Ranking Member G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), will extend this important consumer protection law for another seven years.  The U.S. Safe Web Act gives the Federal Trade Commission additional administrative tools to protect consumers from increased threats of cross-border fraud, spam, and spyware. WASHINGTON, DC – Leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee today wrote to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to follow up on prior requests that the agency make certain information relating to rulemaking activities publicly available. In an effort to improve transparency for taxpayers, committee leaders previously requested EPA post rulemaking petitions and notices of intent to sue, but the agency has yet to take action.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Health Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA), today examined current anti-fraud measures employed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and discussed potential new approaches to fraud prevention. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has repeatedly designated Medicare and Medicaid as being at “high risk” for fraud, abuse, and improper payments. With some estimates predicting the Medicare program could go bankrupt as soon as 2017, the committee focused on new approaches to address these substantial and ongoing threats.
