WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, released the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives passage of H.R. 4853, the compromise agreement on the extension of the tax relief packages enacted in 2001 and 2003:

“While I do not agree with many of the components included in this package, last night’s passage of H.R. 4853 will ensure no American is subject to a tax increase come January 1st.  Rejecting this proposal would have meant more uncertainty for families and small businesses.

“Some say we should have waited for a better deal.  However, a ‘better deal,’ although preferable, was not guaranteed before the Dec. 31st deadline.  What was certain, however, was that without preserving the current tax rates now, Americans would have seen a $3.8 trillion tax increase at the start of the new year.

“This extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts will give individuals, families, businesses and investors the needed confidence to make financial decisions about the future.  I am committed to working with the incoming majority to permanently end the threat of job-killing tax hikes and ensure that hard-working taxpayers no longer fund Washington’s wasteful spending.”
