Alexander Announces Grants for Iberville Parish

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Jamie Hanks | (202) 225-8490

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Federal Highway Administration will award the following funds to Iberville Parish:

Amount

Description

$650,000

This grant provides funding to replace the existing main engine reduction gear on the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LDOTD) ferry boat that carries State Route 75 across Mississippi River from Plaquemine to Sunshine.  The upgrade will increase the vessel’s speed, efficiency and reliability.

Amount

Description

$350,000

This grant provides funding to replace the LDOTD Plaquemine/Sunshine Ferry Terminal’s existing winch-based landing ramp with a hydraulic-based system, to improve dependability and safety.

Amount

Description

$300,000

This grant provides funding to Iberville, Pointe Coupee and West Feliciana Parishes to replace the navigational radar systems on four existing ferry boats operated by LDOTD, which connect communities on both sides of the Mississippi River.  These upgrades will greatly improve river navigational security and capabilities.

These grants are funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, which authorized $60 million for the Ferry Boat Discretionary (FBD) program for construction and rehabilitation of ferry boats and ferry terminal facilities.

“This ferry system provides an invaluable link between the residents and businesses located along both sides of this waterway,” said Alexander.

It is imperative that the federal government continues investing in infrastructure developments.  I am grateful that Iberville Parish will have the funds so that these needed improvements can be made.”
