Alexander Announces Appropriations Subcommittee Assignments

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, today announced his subcommittee assignments for the House Committee on Appropriations for the 111th Congress. Alexander will serve on the Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS), and will retain his seat on the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administrations, and Related Agencies (Agriculture).
“These assignments are a great opportunity for me to serve the best interests of the 5th District, and the rest of Louisiana,” said Alexander. “I could not be more pleased.”
On the Energy and Water Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over the Department of Energy, Corps of Engineers and the Department of the Interior, Alexander will work to protect and preserve Louisiana’s waterways, and to advance the state’s extensive energy agenda.
“With 1,100 miles of navigable waters in the 5th District alone, this subcommittee assignment is especially significant,” said Alexander. “This appointment will allow me to focus on rebuilding the neglected water infrastructure in our district.”
“America’s energy independence greatly relies on increasing domestic production. Louisiana, as one of the largest crude oil and natural gas producers in the United States, is vital to defending our energy security,” added Alexander.
With a seat on the Subcommittee on LHHS, which provides funding for the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Labor, Alexander will work to secure financial support for initiatives essential to the daily lives of every American.
“With the faltering economy, Congress must take action on key issues affecting Americans on a daily basis, such as job creation and security, access to quality health care and ample education opportunities,” said Alexander. “As the federal government continues to look for solutions to our economic crisis, this assignment gives me an avenue to directly influence these decisions.”
Alexander will continue to serve on the Agriculture Subcommittee, a seat he was first appointed to in the 109th Congress. This Subcommittee, which has authority over the Department of Agriculture, the Farm Credit Administration, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Food and Drug Administration, will allow Alexander to continue his advocacy for Louisiana’s farmers.
"Retaining my position on the Agriculture Subcommittee was my top priority," Alexander said. "As a member of this subcommittee, I can directly address the agricultural needs of the 5th District, ensuring our farmers have the necessary resources they need to prosper.”
In addition to his seat on the powerful Appropriations Committee, Alexander will keep his key seat on the House Committee on the Budget.
"I am optimistic about what we can accomplish for Louisiana in the 111th Congress,” said Alexander. “I fully intend to use the authority that comes with these assignments to improve the lives of the residents of our state.”
