Udall Heralds Passage of Resolution He Co-Sponsored Recognizing 60th Anniversary of the Korean War
Mark Udall heralded the passage today of a bipartisan resolution formally recognizing the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, and designating 2012-2013 as the “Year of the Korean War Veteran." Udall co-sponsored the resolution with Senators Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) and James Inhofe (R-Okla.).
"Nearly two million Americans fought in the Korean War, and more than 120,000 of them were killed or wounded in action," Udall said. "I have deep respect for all those who left behind their families and friends to protect a distant country from the spread of communism, which is why I worked across party lines to pass this bipartisan resolution in the Senate. Through my work as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will hold true to my promise to never forget their sacrifices."
The resolution had the support of the Department of Defense 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration (KW60) Committee, a task force authorized by the 2011 Defense Authorization Bill to properly honor and remember the heroes who fought in the Korean War, commonly referred to as the "Forgotten War." The KW60 Committee will implement a national campaign to honor the contributions and sacrifices of the Korean War veterans and educate the American people about the ongoing relevance of the Forgotten War, including commemorative ceremonies in the United States and Korea.
Udall, Akaka, Chambliss and Inhofe serve on the Senate Armed Service Committee.
