Dear Neighbor,

President Obama, in his State of the Union address last night, declared, "The State of the Union is getting stronger. And we've come too far to turn back now." (Visit http://www.whitehouse.gov/state-of-the-union-2012)

He's right. Despite what some are saying, the President’s economic policies are working: last year had the largest private-sector job gains since 2005-- and in the last 22 months, we've created 3.2 million new jobs.  And for the first time since the Clinton administration, we are creating manufacturing jobs here at home-- not least because  the American auto industry is back (with a huge assist from the administration).

He's also right that the notion of fairness has been left out of the agenda in Congress over the last year, and we need to change that.  Everyone should play by the same rules and contribute their fair share toward building a brighter future for our children.

I especially loved it when the President said women should get equal pay for equal work. It's the kind of basic American fairness that helps women, helps families, and helps the economy. I was also deeply pleased to hear the President talk about taking care of our veterans, including a jobs program. (I was honored to have as my guest in the Gallery of the House Chamber a two-tour Army veteran of the Afghanistan War and a fellow New Yorker from Astoria, Robert Song, to honor his service to our country.)

Unfortunately, too many in Congress want to roll back the clock, bringing back the conditions that helped bring about the financial crisis; bringing back the era when a woman's right to choose wasn't a given; and if you got sick you were just out of luck.

In this new year, I stand with the President in being willing to work in common purpose with any member of Congress to confront the challenges we continue to face as we emerge from the Great Recession.
