A prosperous and successful America depends on an educated population, and improving the education of our citizens is one of the most important challenges we face as a nation. Education-based tax incentives are important to many Americans. I voted to extend these education benefits, however, without action from the Senate and President Obama, they will expire at the end of the year.
- Did you know that married couples will pay more in taxes on January 1st than couples who live together but aren’t married? Without leadership from the President and action in the Senate, many Americans will be penalized for simply getting married and filing joint tax returns. I have voted in support of relief from the marriage penalty and I am committed to a complete overhaul of our tax code that is fair, closes loopholes and protects hardworking taxpayers.
- My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the children, teachers and families affected by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
- On January 1st, the death tax will increase substantially without action by Congress. As a former small business owner, I recognize that the death tax can threaten small businesses and farms when a loved one passes away. These family farmers and small business owners pay taxes throughout their entire lifetime, and the burden of an additional tax after death is a severe injustice. I have long been a supporter of permanently repealing this burdensome tax.

Unless Congress acts before January 1st, the average American family of four will see their taxes increase by $2,200. Earlier this year, I supported legislation that extends current tax rates for all Americans.

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful to those who call Central Washington home for giving me the opportunity to represent them. I will continue my work to protect our freedoms as Americans and to ensure that our children's and grandchildren's generations will be better off. I wish you all a happy and safe Thanksgiving.
