The year is rapidly drawing to a close with America moving dangerously close to the fiscal cliff that could spell economic disaster for taxpayers and small businesses as well our national defense, which would face devastating cuts. According to estimates from the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, the tax increases would add $3,500 to the average family’s tax liability. Military and program cuts would happen because of a process known as sequestration, which results from the inability of last year’s Super Committee to reach an agreement on cutting our bloated national debt.

As we celebrated Thanksgiving, I said a prayer of thanks for many things: family, friends, health, our military, another year of God’s faithfulness on the farm despite the drought, and the privilege of living in the greatest country on earth. One of the greatest blessings I gave thanks for is the honor of representing the good people of Missouri’s Fourth Congressional District in our Nation’s Capital. I consider it such a privilege to get to fight for each of you and I thank you for this opportunity to serve you.

Congress reconvened this week for the start of what is known as the post-election “lame duck” session in which your representatives complete unfinished business – and that includes trying to prevent the country from going off what has been termed the “fiscal cliff” that we will be facing in January. That’s when, if no agreement is reached, American taxpayers will be subjected to enormous tax increases that threaten to worsen our economy and devastate the nation’s employment picture.

Good Day, Election Day has come and gone and America has moved a step closer to “Taxmageddon” - the end-of-the-year tax hike that will spell economic hardship for hardworking families and small businesses. It is up to a lame duck session of Congress to take steps to ensure America does not drive over the fiscal cliff that will lead to this severe hardship. Simply put, unless the course we’re on is changed we will have to deal with new, higher tax rates come January. This tax increase is expected to be so devastating that economists at Ernst & Young estimate it would impact nearly one million small businesses and cost our nation 710,000 jobs during the worst unemployment crisis since the Great Depression.

Congresswoman Hartzler pays tribute to Americans who have served our country

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) has issued the following Veterans Day statement: “This Veterans Day, citizens of this great land pay tribute to our men in women in uniform who have given so much to keep us free. Since its origin as Armistice Day marking the end of World War One, November 11th has been a day for Americans to honor those who have served at home and abroad. As the daughter of an Army Reservist, I learned the importance of this day early on in life. Now, as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, my respect and admiration for the defenders of our freedoms grow every day. We are blessed to live in the land of the free because of the many sacrifices made by the brave. We honor the devotion of these brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces by saying “thank you” to them and to their families who have made and continue to make sacrifices of their own. As Americans, we owe our heroes a debt of gratitude we will never be able to repay. May God bless our veterans and may God bless America.”

It has been more than a month and a half since the September 11th terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya – a terrorist attack that killed four U.S. citizens, including Ambassador Chris Stevens – and the Obama Administration is still refusing to give the facts about this tragedy to the American people. Strikingly, most of the information the public is learning is through media reports. It is the responsibility of those in charge to tell us what they know about this sad event.

Issues: Veterans

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler’s Hallowed Grounds Act has been passed by the U.S. House as part of a much larger bill to improve several programs for veterans under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The Hallowed Grounds Act will prohibit an individual who is classified as a Tier III sex offender under the Sex Offender Registry and Notification Act, and has been sentenced to life in prison for that crime, from being buried at a veterans or national cemetery. A Tier III sex offender is one whose offenses against a child might include the crimes of aggravated sexual abuse or sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact.
