Udall Joins Legislation Honoring the North American Bison
Mark Udall joined with Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., and a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers today to introduce "The National Bison Legacy Act," which would designate the North American Bison as the national mammal.
"The North American Bison is a powerful symbol in the West and embodies both the struggles and success of settlements throughout North America's history. That is why my colleagues and I believe we should recognize this majestic animal," Udall said. "The importance of bison in Colorado extends far beyond its symbolism and our heritage. Colorado has a thriving bison ranching industry that sustains herds of these majestic creatures while also creating jobs and driving commerce."
The legislation acknowledges the unique symbolism of the American bison throughout the United States' national history. For example, it has been depicted on the U.S. Department of Interior logo for 94 years, is pictured on two state flags, is the state mammal in three states, and is the iconic mascot for the University of Colorado.
