Boxer Lauds President's Nomination of Albert Nájera as U.S. Marshal for Eastern District

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today praised President Obama’s nomination of former Sacramento Chief of Police Albert Nájera as the United States Marshal for the Eastern District of California. Boxer recommended Nájera to the White House after a thorough interview and vetting process by the Senator’s Eastern District advisory committee.

Senator Boxer said, “I am pleased that the President has appointed respected former Sacramento Police Chief Albert Nájera to be the U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of California. Over a decades-long career, he has distinguished himself as a skilled manager and a dedicated law enforcement official. His experience and commitment to public service will be a tremendous asset to the people of the Eastern District.”

Chief Nájera is currently a general manager at Delegata, an IT consulting and systems integration firm. Between 2003 and 2008, he served as the Sacramento Chief of Police, overseeing a staff of 1,200 and a budget of about $130 million. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Department of Justice selected Nájera to assist local law enforcement reorganization efforts in New Orleans. He has been a public safety consultant for the Brazilian National Police and the South African Police Service. Nájera also oversaw security for the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials at Sacramento State University.

Nájera is a certified SWAT tactical officer and commander who has studied at the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy and at the Bramshill Police College in London. He graduated from California State University Sacramento and earned his Master’s degree in management at Cal Poly Pomona.

U.S. Marshals work within the Justice Department as the law enforcement arm of the federal court system. They protect judges, attorneys, witnesses and jurors; secure courthouses; safeguard witnesses; transport prisoners; and execute court orders and civil and criminal processes.

The Eastern District of California stretches from the Oregon border in the north to the Tehachapi Mountains in the south and from the Coastal Range in the west to the Nevada border in the east. It has courthouses in Sacramento, Fresno, Yosemite, Redding, South Lake Tahoe and Bakersfield.
