Rep. Burton Issues Statement on the Results of the Georgian Elections
Washington, D.C. - Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN-05) Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia, issued the following statement regarding the results of the Georgian Elections:
"On October 1st, the Republic of Georgia took another crucial step forward in its ongoing democratic transformation. In a parliamentary election that has been praised by international election monitors including a number of my Congressional colleagues, Georgians turned out in historic numbers to exercise their right to elect the leadership of their country. I congratulate Bidzina Ivanishvili and the Georgian Dream coalition for their victory at the polls and the people of Georgia for the example they have set for the region and the world.
"The peaceful transfer of leadership is essential to democracy. I commend President Saakashvili for reflecting Georgia's democratic growth through the grace with which he conceded his party’s defeat. In my role as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia, I have had the pleasure of meeting with President Saakashvili several times to discuss the many strides Georgia has taken in political, administrative, and economic reforms. I now urge President Saakashvili to work with the new government during his final year in office to continue this progress.
"I also urge the new government led by the Georgian Dream coalition to work to build on this progress. I am particularly pleased that Bidzina Ivanishvili recently highlighted the commitment of his coalition to continuing Georgia’s integration into the transatlantic community including membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO.)
"The months ahead will test Georgia's new government. I urge all parties to continue to honor their commitment to democratic ideals by working together in a bipartisan manner lay a strong foundation for Georgia’s future."
