Maloney Statement on President Obama’s State of the Union Address

“President Obama’s State of the Union address was magnificent.  The President rightly called upon both Republicans and Democrats to work together to build a blueprint for a stronger America. 

“Despite what some are saying in this political season, the President’s economic policies are working.  In 2011, we had the largest private-sector job gains since 2005, and we’ve created 3.2 million new jobs over the last 22 months.  We are creating manufacturing jobs here at home for the first time since the Clinton administration, and the American auto industry, with a huge assist from the Obama administration, is back.

“But the notion of fairness has been left out of the agenda in Congress over the last year, and we need to change that.  Everyone should play by the same rules and contribute their fair share toward building a brighter future for our children – and those who work hard and act responsibly should also be able to reap the rewards.

“In this new year, we need to work in common purpose to confront the challenges we continue to face as we emerge from the Great Recession.  When we work together, nothing is impossible, and we can create an economy that’s truly ‘built to last.’”
