CAHPS Surveys and Guidance

NOTE: The contract that supports the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) program expired on June 27, 2012. This will result in a delay in updating the data that compose the CAHPS Database for the SECOND HALF OF CALENDAR YEAR 2012. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is now working to award a new CAHPS contract, and when it is in place, the benchmarking database will be updated with the latest data available, including data collected in 2012.

CAHPS surveys ask patients to report on their experiences with a range of health care services at multiple levels of the delivery system. Several surveys ask about experiences with ambulatory care providers such as health plans, physicians' offices, and mental health plans, while others ask about experiences with care delivered in facilities such as hospitals, dialysis centers, and nursing homes.

Because all CAHPS surveys are in the public domain, everyone is free to download and use them. However, to use the CAHPS name, you must follow guidelines for Modifying and Naming CAHPS Surveys.

For each topic below, you can find information about the surveys, the measures you can use for reporting purposes, and advice about using the survey results. For most surveys, you can also download instructions on administering the survey and analyzing the results. Explore the links at the bottom of the page for guidance on initiating and managing a CAHPS survey project.
