[edit] File:Jules-Ferdinand Jacquemart - Intérior de Cour à Rouen - Walters 371978.jpg

"intérior" should be "intérieur"--Zolo (talk) 10:03, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Édouard de Beaumont - Vous Permettez - Walters 371596.jpg

Just that the question mark was missing in the inscription ("Vous permettez ?")

[edit] File:Tibetan - An Unidentified Monk - Walters F84.jpg

The provenance for File:Tibetan - An Unidentified Monk - Walters F84.jpg is missing information on its acquisition by the Walters Museum. According to the data, it is still owned by John and Berthe Ford. Other objects gifted by John and Berthe Ford include a line stating when the gift was made to the Walters Museum. Kaldari (talk) 18:09, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

We at the Walters Art Museum have identified the whole set of objects that are not owned by the museum. We're working on a solution. --Dylan k (talk) 18:19, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Japanese names

A lot of Japanese names are transliterated incorrectly (or in a very out-dated style). The most common problem is that long vowels are being written with a circumflex[1] or an umlut[2] rather than a macron. For example it should be Gotō Shinjō, rather than Gotô Shinjô or Gotö Shinjö. Kaldari (talk) 01:47, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Kawanabe Gyosai should be Kawanabe Kyōsai: [3] Kaldari (talk) 22:49, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Kurowa Katsubumi - Long Sword with Fittings of Rabbits on Waves - Walters 511236 - Group.jpg

It says the sword is from the 18th century but the artist wasn't born until the 19th century (1845). Kaldari (talk) 06:50, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Joseph Théodore Deck - Large Plate - Walters 481909.jpg

Deck's name is spelled with a hyphen (Joseph-Théodore Deck), but the Walters lists it without a hyphen. Kaldari (talk) 16:01, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

This probably happened because we checked the Walters' names against names already in use on Wikimedia, etc. In many cases, the later spelling was used. The Walters uses a (industry standard) structured vocabulary for artist names, which in many cases does not match the names used here. More info at: https://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/ulan/index.html --Dylan k (talk) 18:24, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Near Eastern - Cylinder Seal with Standing Deity - Walters 42428 - Side A.jpg

The inscription field is just "[Inscription]". Kaldari (talk) 21:42, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Same for File:Colmar Painter - Running Warrior - Walters 481920.jpg and File:Epeleios Painter - Kylix Depicting a Standing Youth and Two Youths Bathing - Walters 4889 - Side A.jpg.--Zolo (talk) 21:51, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, this seems to be the case for quite a few. Kaldari (talk) 23:02, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Hippolyte Camille Delpy - The House of M Lucas - Walters 371157.jpg

This is en:Boissise-la-Bertrand, not "Boisisse-la-Bertrand". --Zolo (talk) 11:09, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Chinese - Scepter ("Ju-i") - Walters 42298.jpg

Description was: "Mutton-fat." Consists of three oval plaques mounted in wood and carved with emblems and the character. Tassled cords. Mounted on paste-board covered with red silk."

"the character": which one ? (text missing)
"Mutton-fat.": sounds obscure (it actually refers to very bright jade)
Part or all of that description could probably go to the "medium" field that only has "jade". --Zolo (talk) 17:22, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
By the way "Ju-i" (Wade-Giles spelling) is more commonly written ruyi (pinyin). --Zolo (talk) 09:41, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Egyptian - Scarab with the Name of King Siptah - Walters 4234 - Bottom.jpg

There were 2 typos in the description for this object. Kaldari (talk) 03:48, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

when fixing typos, it may help to indicate what they were, in case the Walters would like to make similar corrections to the source data. --Dylan k (talk) 18:26, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Chinese names

Transliteration

Not really an error but Chinese artist naming is not consistent, some of the being in Wade Giles, some others in pinyin. I guess it is a known issue since some provide both forms, but I list some of them here for convenience.

  • Wade Giles (at least non-pinyin): Ch'ien Ch'en-ch'un, Ch'iang P'u, Chiang family, Chieh-fu, Ho Kuo-tsung, Hsu Fang, Hsiu Mu Chu Shih, Liang Shih-cheng, Liu T'ung hsun, Pao K'ai, Sung-shou, Wang Yu-tun, Yüan Shang-t'ung, Yun-lin Chu-shih
  • Pinyin: Cuo Yigui, Dong Yuan, Du Jin, Fei Yigeng, Gao Qipei, Gu Jianlong, Ho Ying, Lan Ying, Lan Shen, Leng Mei, Qian Feng, Qian Hui'an, Qiu Ying, Ren Bonian, Sheng Mou, Tang Yin, Wang Xianzhi, Wang Yuanqi, Zhang Lu, Zhou Xian, Zhu Wenxin

[edit] File:Adriaen Brouwer - Two Peasants in an Inn - Walters 372409.jpg

Hi everyone. File:Adriaen Brouwer - Two Peasants in an Inn - Walters 372409.jpg has an artist infobox for Adriaen Brouwer, and a title, however, if you read the description and double check the Walters website, Brouwer did not create the artwork, but someone (perhaps a student) in his "circle," therefore I'm calling this an error and I think it should probably be changed or reconsidered for a new title and the removal of the Brouwer in the artist section (perhaps rename it "Student of Brouwer," or "Someone in the circle of Brouwer," or whatever the curators would say. Thanks. I'd be bold and change it, but, I'm not really comfortable doing so until we get the Walters impact (and maybe someone else changes it of course). Sarah (talk) 14:03, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

This is certainly a problem, but is related to the upload rather than to data provided by the museum. It should be fixed soo (see Commons_talk:Walters_Art_Museum#Clean_up). About file titles, I would agree, but it would need to be done consistently for all files. --Zolo (talk) 14:32, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Master of the Carminati Coronation - Last Supper - Walters 37753.jpg

This file originally had no artist listed (nor is there one listed on the Walters site). It seems the artist is Master of the Carminati Coronation (Italian, active 1425-1450) (possibly Antonio Orsini). Kaldari (talk) 19:09, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Typo in File:Algerian - Turban Cover - Walters 83178.jpg

Place or origin "Algeiria" should be "Algeria"

Is this same mistake present on other items in the upload? --Dylan k (talk) 18:27, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Album of birds and flowers

Artist is said to be "Toshun (Japanese, active 16th century-1723)". If this is a single person, this is pretty vague, so why "1723". The Union List of Artist name has a Toshun, active 16th century). The work itself is dated "1747-1797", which is not within the artist's work period, is that a reprint ?. --Zolo (talk) 12:12, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Walters 35101

All paintings in this category have similar dimensions and accession number, and exactly the same number. However the museum website does not group them under a same "parent" object. What kind of relation is there between those paintings ? --Zolo (talk) 21:36, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

These paintings with these similar accession numbers were once a part of an album of paintings. They have the similar numbers to represent that. The website doesn't show the relationship because the parent album does not have a record on the website. --Dylan k (talk) 20:56, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Chinese - Scepter - Walters 42310.jpg

[edit] File:Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory - The Toilet of Madame - Walters 48995.jpg

In the description it says: "Les m?urs françaises". Not sure what letter is supposed to go where the ? is. Kaldari (talk) 08:02, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

most probably "mœurs"--Zolo (talk) 08:22, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Lorenzo de Zaragoza - Madonna and Child on a Throne - Walters 37747.jpg

The date for the artwork is listed as "between 1410 and 1420", but the lifespan of the artist is given as "ca. 1364-1401". One of them must be wrong. Kaldari (talk) 22:59, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Italian - Devotional Plaque with the Madonna of the Fish - Walters 541708.jpg

[edit] File:French - Watch Case with Lot and His Daughters - Walters 58136.jpg

"The rear view of one daughter who has removed her clothes might stir the imagination, especially when the cool watch was held in a warm (male) hand."

I've removed the weird commentary from from our version, but it still exists on the Walters site.[4] Kaldari (talk) 02:04, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Egyptian - Scarab with Unification Image - Walters 4279 - Impression Detail.jpg

This impression detail image is associated with the wrong scarab, as you can see if you click on Additional Views on the Walters site.[5] Kaldari (talk) 02:52, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your input, but I must say I am not quite clear about your comment: what it "not possible to adjust" ?
Two additional questions:
You removed "[Date Seal Translation] Tiger 11 (December 1854 - January 1855)". Was that wrong ?
Is there an easily accessible source for the data you added ? If so could you add it in the " |references = " field ?--Zolo (talk) 20:16, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Hello, Zolo.
I removed the 11 by the 12 at ’Kunisato - Edo Murasaki Gojuyon-cho - Walters 95133.jpg’. The date seal is 十二, jūni (rat 1852, not tiger, 1854), or did I made a mistake? For reading date seals the best book is Andreas Marks, Publishers of Japanese Woodblock Prints: A Compendium, Leiden 2011. You can find the print also at the Waseda database (http://www.enpaku.waseda.ac.jp/db/enpakunishik/search.php), accession number 006-0387 (type in the number in the first field top left).
The first question: If I go to (for example) to ’Hiranoya Shinzo - Toyokuni kigo kijutsu kurabe - Walters 95131.jpg’ I only can reach the German version. Top is the print, followed by the description (Beschreibung). A few fields below follows ’Dateiversionen’; there I can see a thumbnail (third column from left) and far right is the column ’Kommentar’, including the text >>== Summary == {{Walters Art Museum artwork |artist = Hiranoya Shinzo |title = Toyokuni kigo kijutsu kurabe |description = {{en|The monk Kurodo Tokugo wanted to get back at the people who ridiculed him because of ...<< Here (’Kommentar’) the artist is given as ’|artist = Hiranoya Shinzo|’ (!). This entry I couldn’t change at the German site (’Bearbeiten’ = http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Hiranoya_Shinzo_-_Toyokuni_kigo_kijutsu_kurabe_-_Walters_95131.jpg&action=edit); I only can edit the description but not the commentary in the lower part of the site.
Best, --Horst Gräbner (talk) 21:50, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
I think the problem is that in the Walters website this and previous prints are considered "other views of" File:Tsujiokaya Kamekichi - Kanadehon chushingura - Walters 95114.jpg and all descriptions from that print were copied: author, title, description date, inscriptions, size were all copied from the other print. So basically we had 2 prints with no valid descriptions. Horst fixed some of that, although I would like to know the source of that information. Books describing it or reading inscriptions? Size must be wrong too ( it is not the same as size of File:Tsujiokaya Kamekichi - Kanadehon chushingura - Walters 95114.jpg .) --Jarekt (talk) 04:04, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
re@Horst Gräbner
The text in the "Dateiversionen" part is not supposed to be editable, its purpose is just to show what the description looked like the first time the file was uploaded. This is mostly useful for maintenance work. The reliable, up-to-date image description is supposed to be the one in the blue "Beschreibung" box.
I have added the Waseda link to File:Kunisato - Edo Murasaki Gojuyon-cho - Walters 95133.jpg. Additions are welcome. Your edits seem fine, but I am not very familiar with Japanese art (I'll let the museum people tell you if there are things they disagree with). --Zolo (talk) 05:26, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

My intention is to show a small list of some related images, immediately followed by a link to the category bearing all related images on commons.

  • Result is primarily an expanded Image-Description-Table with my intended Addendum.
  • But in addition I get the strange Error reporting ...

(... You can help by reporting errors and typos at Commons:Walters Art Museum/error report. ...)

And here I'm reporting the error, using the link in the Error-reporting-row.
PS:
I've tried different variations of the link after (... and more pictures under ... (extern, intern, </a ...>...</a>, etc.)
Always I'm getting the displayed link with an additional error-report-row ;-(

I assume you are talking about File:Nayarit - Seated Male Figure with Arms Resting on Upraised Knees - Walters 482817.jpg image. The <gallery></gallery> should include other views of the same object. Link to the category is not necessary as long as image is properly categorized.--Jarekt (talk) 13:07, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, thats right.
My intention is a direct hint to the many other images, because the normal category-link being at the very bottom of the image-page can be very far away, caused by sometimes extensive CopyRight-infos ...
It's only thought as additional info for a greater number of other (may be more or less related) images out there on commons
-- which would be far too much all listed in the added gallery!

----
Additional info:
A normal external link like Walters Art Museum
after the <gallery> ... </gallery> - section is also causing an error, as you can see now here: Seated Male Figure - Walters
Is this a functioning as intended feature ore a real error?
Jaybear (talk) 14:41, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
if you do not want category links to be on the bottom you can place them on top or in between images and descriptions, by changing your preferences in the my_preference/gadgets tab. Parameter "other_versions" is not meant for external links, so please do not put them there. See more about use of the template at {{Artwork}}. We are trying to follow those recommendations in order to ensure uniformity of the descriptions. Links in unusual places are unlikely to be found. --Jarekt (talk) 18:12, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Bélanger - Bust of Louis XVII - Walters 27369.jpg

"After Bélanger". It seems to be François-Joseph Bélanger (see this book, p.312 - in French), but that should be indicated. --Zolo (talk) 10:27, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Jean-Léon Gérôme - Diogenes - Walters 37131.jpg

Dated "MDCCLX" (one C missing on the Walters' website)--Zolo (talk) 18:22, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Pierre Puvis de Chavannes - Hope - Walters 37156.jpg

Not an error, but according to the artwork description, it was shown at the Paris Salon in 1872. But this is not indicated in the exhibition history, contrary to similar artworks. --Zolo (talk) 08:18, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Augustin Jean Moreau-Vauthier - The Three Theological Virtues - Walters 71584.jpg

The description quotes this book, but it does not quite match what is written there:

  • "In reviewing this work at the 1857 Paris Salon"
  • the book is actually about the 1855 Salon, where the monument was exhibited in an unfinished state as noted in a note in the cited book).
  • "Though Moreau-Vauthier had participated with his father, Jean-Louis Moreau, in producing a Renaissance-style ivory casket which was shown at the Exposition Universelle of 1855, the "Theological Virtues" was one of two of the sculptor's first works to be accepted in the Paris Salon; "
  • Meaning is not very clear given that this object was first exhibited in 1855.

The closing quotation mark was also missing after "Ste. Chapelle.", making it a bit difficult to understand. --Zolo (talk) 11:24, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Moche - Gourd - Walters TL200920272 - Side D.jpg

Gourds of plant origin may be made either from Lagenaria siceraria or from Crescentia cujete. Can you confirm which one it is ? Michel Chauvet (talk)

[edit] http://art.thewalters.org/detail/24760

Measurements: "Framed H: 33 1/2 x W: 40 1/2 x H: 5 1/4 in. (85.09 x 102.87 x 13.34 cm)". The second "H" should probably be "D". --Zolo (talk) 08:33, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Hafiz - A Drinking and Merry-making Party - Walters W63894B - Full Page.jpg

The description on the website, and on Commons misspells the word "depicts":

English: This folio from Walters manuscript W.638 deipcts a drinking and merry-making party."

[edit] File:Zakariya ibn Muhammad Qazwini - A Hyena and a Lynx - Walters W659107A - Full Page.jpg

It says this is an image of a hyena and a lynx. It appears to be a wolf (or dog like creature) and a rabbit. Sarah (talk) 06:49, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
