Dubin Receives Riland Medal for Academic Leadership
Bruce Dubin, DO, JD, received the Riland Medal for Academic Leadership from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Health Professions, Behavioral and Life Sciences at their convocation ceremonies Sept. 13.Dr. Dubin is associate dean for medical education and academic affairs at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, one of UNT Health Science Center’s four schools.
The Riland Medal is named for the institution’s founding trustee, W. Kenneth Riland, DO. The honor is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the improvement of the health care work force, medical education, health policy or osteopathic philosophy and who have served as a community advocate.
During the award ceremony, Dr. Dubin challenged people in the osteopathic profession to create a culture of professionalism.
“For the educators among us here today, as professionals, we must serve as role models,” Dr. Dubin said. “We must realize that our job is to direct, help and challenge the young men and women who have taken up this task of study to become health care professionals. As educators, we must ask nothing less of ourselves than excellence in everything we say or do. If we do our job right, this culture of professionalism will take root and blossom.”
NYCOM is one of eight academic schools of the New York Institute of Technology. NYCOM was founded in 1977 and has grown to become the second largest medical school in the nation. It is the only osteopathic medical school in New York State.
