UNT Health Science Center Dean Appointed to State Council on Health

Fernando Treviño, PhD, MPH, dean of the School of Public Health at UNT Health Science Center, was recently appointed to the Texas Health and Human Services Council by Gov. Rick Perry.

Dr. Treviño joined the nine-member board that oversees health and human services for Texas. The council assists the Executive Commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission in developing rules and policies that focus on the health needs of Texas citizens. Dr. Treviño’s term will expire Feb. 1, 2009.

Past president of the World Federation of Public Health Associations, Dr. Treviño is also a former executive director of the American Public Health Association and was instrumental in procuring the presidential declaration of Public Health Week in 1995. He was elected an honorary fellow of the Polish Society of Hygiene and is one of only 100 people in the world to be elected as an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Health in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Treviño earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Houston, a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Texas School of Public Health and a doctorate degree in preventive medicine and community health from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
