Outreach Programs

University of North Texas Health Science Center has received prestigious recognition for its longstanding history of programs aimed at increasing diversity within the scientific community. These awards include the Award for Excellence in Minority Recruitment from the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals, designation as an NIH-Minority Access Role Model Institution, and the President's Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering from the National Science Foundation.

The GSBS Office of Outreach administers programs whose principal goal is to increase the numbers of under-represented, disadvantaged or first-generation college students entering the health professions and the biomedical sciences. The programs currently in place are:

Primary School Outreach Programs:

Adopt-A-School with Fort Worth Independent School District

Go Center Project with Fort Worth Independent School District

Minority K-12 Initiative for Teachers and Students (MKITS)

UNTHSC Go Center

Summer Programs for Undergraduate Students:

HBCU Undergraduate Collaborative Summer Training Program in Prostate Cancer

Summer Multicultural Advanced Research Training ( SMART)

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Research Training (McNair)

Programs for Graduate Students:

Minority Opportunities in Research and Education (MORE)

Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program and Retention Enhancement (PREP)

Each program is distinct, but offers summer research internships for college (SMART, McNAIR),  K-12 mentoring, tutoring and advising (Adopt-A-School, Go Center), support for graduate training (MORE), and involvement of student organizations in a variety of activities (Adopt-A-School, Go Center).

Several partnerships with minority serving institutions have been developed, and a student pipeline established between them and the various programs at the health science center. As a result of these efforts, UNT Health Science Center has been recognized by both Clinton and Bush White House Administrations. Other awards include the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals Excellence in Minority Admissions Award and recognition by the National Institutes of Health/Minority Access, Inc, as a Minority Role Model Institution.
