Denton County Transportation Authority officials are set to help out students with late-evening classes at the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University.

At their recent monthly meeting, board members approved a staff proposal to add a southbound train that leaves at 9:20 p.m. from Denton. The agency will also extend two bus routes later in the evening, one serving UNT and one serving TWU.

“We should now be able to accommodate classes that end at nine,” said Dee Leggett, vice president of communications and planning. “It was something that we heard in the round of public meetings we had that addressed the service changes.”

Leggett said the change will not take care of everyone who has evening classes, but it is a good start.

The changes will go into effect Jan. 14 along with other service improvements, which include extending Route 1 to serve the Unicorn Lake route, changes to Route 2 to better serve Sally Beauty employees from the Med Park station, increasing the frequency of buses in Lewisville and Denton and the addition of a northbound departure from Trinity Mills at 7:30 p.m. to close a gap the agency had in the evening.

“I think this gets our base level of service down, but we still would like to see all our routes on Connect on a consistent 30-minute headway, so we still have a little bit to go there,” Leggett said.

As for future improvements, Leggett said, officials will continue to tweak daytime service.

“We’ll look at filling in our peak service hours so we have more service during the mid day.”
