The Mean Green soccer team captured its second consecutive Sun Belt Conference championship with a little help from two other teams.

Western Kentucky tied Middle Tennessee 1-1 on the final weekend of play, leaving all three teams tied for first place in regular season play.  UNT earned the number one seed in the conference tournament, Oct. 31-Nov. 4, since the Mean Green had the highest point total in matches involving the three teams.

The conference tournament will be held in Mobile, Ala., and hosted by the University of South Alabama.

The Mean Green are ninth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America South region ranking.

The championship match will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 4, and the winner will earn a place in the NCAA national tournament. Brackets will be announced Nov. 5 and the national finals will be Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 in San Diego.

The Mean Green finished the season with a 13-4-2 record and lost one match in conference play, finishing 8-1-1 in the team’s last year in the Sun Belt. UNT moves to Conference USA in 2013-14.

This is the team's seventh championship in UNT soccer history. "Winning championships never gets old," observed Head Coach John Hedlund.
