Our Purpose

The Primary Care Research Center was established to address primary care and public health issues to improve the health of North Texas citizens and beyond. A collaborative and interdisciplinary approach is needed because current actions have not addressed many national problems.  For example, the United States ranks first in the world in healthcare spending but ranks...

  • Last or next to last among 5 other advanced nations in quality of care and access to it

  • Dead last in all measures of equity

  • Last among 23 other nations with the worst infant mortality rate

Many medical advancements over the past 50 years have been a result of research conducted within tertiary medical centers even though the majority of healthcare delivery in this country is provided by primary care clinicians in the outpatient setting. Unfortunately, the knowledge that was generated has had limited applicability to outpatient primary care delivery. Moreover, traditional researchers (basic science and public health) have worked in isolation limiting the translation of new knowledge into clinical practice.

The Primary Care Research Center is revolutionizing the approach to primary care research by developing collaborative partnerships within and outside the institution to improve the health and lives of the people of Texas through interdisciplinary and translational research and education. By blurring the lines between primary care and public health research, we can develop, study, and implement new research into clinical practice to better the lives of all people regardless of age, gender, race/ethnicity, or income.
